Thursday 28th February - St David's Day

To celebrate St David's Day (and all things Welsh), Baloo cooked his famous Glamorgan Sausages (Selsig Morgannwg). Thesese are made from leeks, cheese, herbs and breadcrumbs - originally invented as a poor man’s sausage, because it contains no meat, it is a popular and very tasty breakfast or supper dish.

Tuesday 26th February - Scouts make popcorn

Popcorn is high in fibre, low in calories, sodium and sugar and is fat free. It was first given to European immigrants landing in North America by Native Americans on Friday 22nd February 1630. The popcorn industry in the US alone is worth around a billion dollars a year with some 20million cubic metres of popcorn being eaten. Cinemas make more profit from popcorn than they do from ticket sales. Also, popcorn pops at 175ºC.

Hard to do indoors... well, ok, we were prpreparing for when we get to do it for real by lashing together some bean poles to make a frame, to practice our knots.  We also made some edible rafts out of breadsticks and chocolate roles all tied together with strawberry laces.

3 - Tilt their head backwards to open their AIRWAY and check they are BREATHING.

We will continue next week.  To learn what to do in an emergency if you think the person is not breathing, either click on the badge or this link.

With National Potato day fast approaching, we salute the humble spud with an evening of potato-related activities.  Did you know potatoes provide energy and many of the key vitamins, minerals and proteins necessary for life.  And in 1996 potatoes became the first food to be grown in space onboard the shuttle Columbia.  Click here or on the spud above to learn more potato facts.

Highlight of the evening was cooking jacket potatoes and tasting different fillings - beans and cheese was by far the most popular.  To learn how to cook the perfect jacket potator, just click here.

Participants walk 30, 40 or 50 kilometers daily, and, on completion, receive a royally approved medal (Vierdaagsekruis).

Thursday 20th September 2012 - Harvest, Squirrels and Nuts.

We learnt about the different types of foodstuffs which are harvested, not just at this time and in our country but all around the world, to come to our tables.

We identified the different members of the squirrel family.  Did you know that there are around 280 different species of squirrel.  Most have big eyes which help them skilfully climb trees and avoid predators.  Flying squirrels can’t fly like birds but they can glide between trees; some have been known to glide for distances of up to 90 metres (295 ft).

Squirrels eat mostly nuts, fruits and seeds so we tasted different types of nut.  Nut allergies can be extremely dangerous to some people.  To learn more about why some people's bodies "go nuts over nuts" click on the squirrel or on this link.

Tuesday 18th September 2012 - Scouts planning for Gwentrek GT12

We've now got the basis of a team and we need to review our skills.  We practiced pitching our new tents, writing up a route plan card and organising what food we need to take.
